SEO, AEO and GEO explained: one programme, three surfaces

SEO (search engine optimisation) helps pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) helps content become the direct answer to a question in search features and assistants. GEO (generative engine optimisation) helps brands get cited and described accurately in AI-generated answers. They overlap heavily and work best planned as one programme.
What is SEO, and is it still the foundation?
SEO is the practice of making pages discoverable, understandable and preferable to search engines: crawlability, indexing, relevance, quality, links and user experience. It remains the foundation for a simple reason. Many AI answer experiences ground their responses in web search. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on its core ranking systems, and assistants such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity retrieve web results before answering. If you cannot be found in search, you are harder to find everywhere.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimisation is about being selected as the answer to a specific question. It grew out of featured snippets and voice search, and now extends to AI assistants. AEO is mostly about form and clarity: a direct answer near the top of the page, question-style headings, concise definitions, lists and FAQs, all of which make your content easy to extract. Our guide to answer-first writing covers the craft.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimisation is the newest term and the least settled. It refers to improving how often and how accurately generative AI systems mention, cite and describe your brand. The term was popularised by academic research in 2023 that tested how content changes, such as adding citations, statistics and quotations, affected visibility in generative answers. The field is young, engines change often, and claims about precise GEO "ranking factors" should be treated with scepticism.
In practice GEO adds three emphases to SEO and AEO: entity clarity (machines know exactly who you are), third-party mentions (others describe you consistently), and measurement across AI engines rather than one results page.
Definitions at a glance
- SEO: rank pages in search results. Measured by rankings, impressions, clicks.
- AEO: be the direct answer to a question. Measured by featured answers and answer selection.
- GEO: be cited and accurately described in AI-generated answers. Measured by presence, citation and accuracy across AI engines.
- AI Overviews: Google's AI-generated summaries shown above or within search results.
Where do they overlap, and where do they differ?
The overlap is large. Clear, useful, well-structured content from a trustworthy, well-known source helps all three. The differences are in emphasis:
- SEO cares most about the page and its links.
- AEO cares most about the passage and its clarity.
- GEO cares most about the brand and how it is described across the web.
That is why we named our agency after three surfaces rather than three acronyms. SNMRush stands for Search, Neural answers and Mentions. Search is the results page. Neural answers are what AI assistants write. Mentions are what others say about you, which both of the first two lean on.
How do you plan them as one programme?
A sequence we use with clients:
- Listen. Find the questions and tensions your audience voices. We use SOMIN, an AI audience-research platform, as our technology partner here; the SOMIN for agencies page explains how agencies apply it.
- Baseline. Measure rankings and AI presence for those questions.
- Fix foundations. Crawlability, indexing, structured data, entity consistency.
- Build answers. One clear page per important question, answer-first, with real evidence.
- Earn mentions. Credible independent descriptions in the sources AI engines cite in your category.
- Measure and repeat. Monthly, against the baseline.
Do you need separate teams for each?
Rarely. Splitting them creates duplicated pages and conflicting priorities. The skills differ slightly: technical SEO, editorial clarity and digital PR, but the plan should be one. Paid media and organic visibility should talk to each other too; our sister app Trafix focuses on true profitability in paid traffic, and the same discipline of tying visibility to revenue applies to organic and AI channels.
What about the businesses changing fastest?
Categories where buyers research heavily before purchase, such as B2B software, finance, health, travel and education, are seeing the biggest shift towards AI-assisted research. For these, a combined SEO, AEO and GEO programme is no longer optional. For a view of how strategy work grounded in audience evidence plays out for a brand, see the Viva School case study.
What does a combined programme look like in the first 90 days?
Month one is listening and baseline: a question map, a prompt panel and a technical audit. Month two is foundations and the first set of rewritten or new answer pages, starting with the questions closest to a buying decision. Month three is mention work and the first measured readout against the baseline. None of this is exotic. The difference is that every step serves the same list of real audience questions, so search, answers and mentions reinforce each other instead of competing for budget.
A short checklist to tell whether your current work is joined up: do your SEO targets, your FAQ content and your PR topics come from the same question list? Does one report show rankings and AI presence side by side? If not, start there.
The acronyms will keep multiplying. The underlying job will not: understand what your audience asks, answer it better than anyone, make sure machines understand who you are, and give others good reason to mention you.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Many AI answers rely on search indexes, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds emphasis on entity clarity, third-party mentions and measurement across AI engines.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on being selected as the direct answer to a question. GEO focuses on how AI-generated answers mention, cite and describe your brand overall.
Is SNMRush related to Semrush?
No. SNMRush is an independent agency. The name stands for Search, Neural answers and Mentions, and it has no affiliation with any SEO software company.
